Backyard Amphibian of the Day:
This frog hopped into the bushes when I got closer than this, and I was extremely impressed–it got some serious air, I would guess almost two feet of height.
There are two very different kinds of predators for Backyard Co-Bugs of the Day today.
Backyard Co-Bug of the Day #1:
Damselfly
Backyard Co-Bug of the Day #2:
Juvenile praying mantis
It doesn't have wings yet, but it hopped impressively.
The forecast for today said it was going to rain all day, so I wasn't expecting to be able to do a bug walk. The rain didn't come until evening, though, so... Other Bugs:
Robber flies are abundant lately. Female. Note the ovipositor. She was rubbing that on the stem of the plant.
Leaf beetle
Brown hooded owlet moth caterpillar
I checked up on the black swallowtails:
Two of them were dead, possibly from some kind of fungus infection. I hope the others don't catch it. I removed these two from the plant.
I noticed that there were a couple of looper caterpillars on the plant, too. I can see three here.
I think the one on the left has just changed instars.
Three different looks.
Leaf-footed bug nymphs:
I think that white blob is a spider egg sac.
Milkweed tussock moth caterpillar
Tachinid fly
Stinkbug nymph
Cricket
Fly and leaf hopper
Two different species of katydids on the side of the house.
I have seen several different species entering the tubes of this mason bee house. I think some of them are predators going in after the ones that live there.
