I didn't have to walk to find today's Backyard Bug of the Day. It landed right on my computer screen.
Backyard Bug of the Day:
Moth fly, which is a tiny species of fly.
I think I prefer this picture, backlit by the computer screen instead of lit by the camera's light.
I know it's a pest, but I think Japanese beetles are cool. I have noticed that there are not very many of them lately.
I assume these next two are nymphs of the same species, and one is more developed than the other:
They were tiny, as I think you can see from this picture.
Cricket
Aphids
I learned in my online class about why some aphids have wings while the rest don't, but I am chagrined to say I don't remember why.
Wasp
I think this is Brood 3 of the milkweed tussock moth caterpillars. They have moved as a group to a new plant. They look like ugly 1970s carpeting.
The vibrant blue background of this picture is my husband's shirt.
The black swallowtail caterpillars continue to develop:
Can you see a couple of looper caterpillars, too?
There's a looper in this shot, too.
The uncooperative dragonfly was back today, on the same rock.
Primrose moth
