Today was another race against darkness to get my pictures done. I left early in the morning (by my standards), and came home tired just before dusk. Fortunately, I found what I was looking for fairly quickly.
I think today I will post things in the order that I found them.
Daily Dandelion:
Backyard Bug of the Day:
Zoomed in here, it looks like this bug has a parasite. I am not sure if that's what that star shaped thing is, but I see it occasionally on bugs. It is so, so, so tiny, though, that I never see it until I look at the pictures on the computer, so I've never known to try to get a closer shot of it.
Here's a Backyard Bud Update - I featured this one a while ago, and it's progressing:
Backyard Bud of the Day:
I think this is amaranth.
Backyard Bug Behavior of the Day:
I don't know what this ant is doing, whether these bugs are some it is herding, or if it was just examining them for some other reason.
You can see that the background is getting darker in the pictures as night falls...
Speaking of Backyard Bud Behavior...
This is a praying mantis egg case, and from the strings that are dangling out of it today, which I don't think were there yesterday, I think the baby praying mantises hatched from it today. I am sorry I was out and missed that! There are a few others around the yard that don't seem to have hatched yet, so I will keep an eye on those.
Very conveniently, I found a spider after I found all of the other things I was looking for, so I can end with Arachnid Appreciation:

Sunshine
It was sunny today.
Until it wasn't. But it was nice for most of the day. We got the vegetable garden planted, where we will hopefully have only benevolent bugs, not anything that wants to eat our veggies.
I feel some ambivalence about today's Backyard Bug of the Day...
It was hard to choose. No obvious winner.
The Backyard Bug Behavior of the Day was easier. Remember when I told you about the spittlebug?
I found one that was doing the spittle-frothing thing. It looks like an adult, though, so I am confused about what's going on, but at least I got to see the process.
Backyard Bud of the Day:
Have I used this one before? Or one similar? Let's pretend I haven't used this one before. I had a hard time finding buds today.
Daily Dandelion:
More weird plant things...
A weird growth on another oak tree. It's about the size of a golf ball. Not really like the one from the other oak tree. Obviously have no idea what this one is, either.
An exciting Backyard Bird of the Day:
Hummingbird! It looks like a ruby throat, except the throat is gold.
Unfortunately, it favors high trees.
Here, I zoomed this one in a little for you.
My Arachnid Appreciation today was special delivery:

I opened my newspaper, and there it was! (I know it probably just crawled into the newspaper while it was sitting on the ground in front of my house, by the street, but still).
My conclusions still need work.

Playing Games
The bugs wanted to play hide and seek today.
Bugs play hide and seek like two year olds - if I hide my face, you can't see me.
Always a fun game.
Backyard Bug of the Day:
It sort of looks like it is made of wood, but it's not a Pinocchio bug hoping to become a real bug. It's already real. Not that I know what kind it is.
Backyard Bud and Bloom of the Day:
Naturally I have no idea what this is, either, but I like the star shaped buds.
Remember those eggs I posted a picture of the other day?
They have hatched.
As I suspected, they are sawfly larvae. Cute and creepy all at once.
Daily Dandelion:
I am going with the deconstructionist version today. Or something.
Today's Arachnid Appreciation is about an arachnid appreciating me. Or my gardening clog, anyway. By the way, it's hard to take a close-up picture of your own foot.

Handsome, isn't it?
I hope tomorrow the bugs don't want to play tag...
By the way, I have now been blogging for a whole month! Woo hoo!

It's May, for Crying Out Loud!
This is today's Backyard Bug of the Day:
I know what you're thinking. "Cute bug, but couldn't you do any better with the picture?"
No. I couldn't do any better. Because it was freakin' freezing outside today, and the bugs just did not want to play. Three of the four anti-bug/macro-photography factors were in play today: it was cold (54ยบ! At the end of May! Thirty degrees colder than yesterday!), it was dark (stupid gloomy clouds), and it was really, really windy. Not just occasional gusts of breezy air, but flat out wind. All I needed was some rain to make it impossible to go outside. That might have actually been preferable, because it's frustrating to go out and not find anything.
Though I did find some bugs besides this one. I saw a baby praying mantis. But the only one I could get a picture of was this one, probably because the way it was situated in this plant it couldn't see me. So, that's the bug you get today.
I almost gave up even trying for Backyard Bud of the Day:
I am surprised I was even able to get a Daily Dandelion:
Here's what that same dandelion looked like last night:
Hmph.

Bug Watching
If you ever have an opportunity to sit and watch a six-spotted tiger beetle for a while, pull up a chair. They are extremely amusing. Well, if you like slap-stick comedy, that is. I saw a six-spotted tiger beetle and another bug on a rock today, and the s.s.t.b. ran over to the other bug, and shoved it off the rock. That wasn't what I was expecting. Battle, yes. Playground antics, no. I watched a couple of other s.s.t.b's versus each other and some other bugs (stare-down with a spider) for a while later in the afternoon, and all I can say is, watch them if you get the chance. There are some things I just have no means to share, or ability to properly convey here. Go outside and find some six-spotted tiger beetles. But don't get all up in their faces because a) they will probably just fly away, and you won't see the funny stuff and b) they apparently bite.
I saw a lot more bugs today than I took pictures of, not so much because of lack of cooperation (though there was plenty of that), but because I saw them when we were working on preparing the vegetable garden for planting, and I had traded my camera for my work gloves for a while. Most of the bugs were under bricks, or between bricks, and were not happy to have us disturb them. Many ants bit my husband, to his consternation. "What did I ever do to them?" "Well, you destroyed their home, killed several of their family members..." Under bricks (or rocks) is a good place to find bugs, but they will scurry the moment you do.
Speaking of scurrying, today's Backyard Bug of the Day was, like the six-spotted tiger beetle, also somewhat comical, but in a more exasperating way. It was on a leaf, was aware of my presence, and trying not to have its picture taken. So whenever I would get close, it would switch to the other side of the leaf. I wish you could have seen it. Very funny. And annoying. I did get a bunch of pictures, though, so...
Backyard Bug of the Day:
It doesn't really come through in any of the pictures, but the back of the bug is black, white, and pink.
This is the closest it would let me get. Love the hot pink legs.
This is where it's playing that game of switching to the other side of the leaf.
It's very nimble. I don't know what kind of bug it is, but I am sure it is a true bug. You can see the proboscis in this picture.
I zoomed in one of the pictures to get a better look. You can kind of see the pink, maybe?
It actually flew away at one point, but I later found it on another plant, and so some of these pictures are from our later meeting.
It's a lot easier to get pictures of bugs before they hatch.:
Except that you can't see the bugs. I am not even sure if these eggs have hatched. I think they are sawfly eggs. The total domination of my backyard by sawfly larvae will therefore continue.
This is what they look like from the other side of the leaf.
Bugs were still trying to get up close and personal today:
(I found another tick on me, too, but before it had a chance to bite).
This is the best picture I have ever had of one of these (I think maybe it's a mite?). I find it anatomically confusing.
Speaking of confusing...
Caterpillars have a weird way of doing things.
Backyard Bud of the Day:
Two stages of the same kind of flower, one of those flowers that look like a daisy, but aren't.
My daisies got weed whacked over the weekend. Sigh.
Daily Dandelion begins romantically:
But by the end of the day...
They seem to have quarreled.
I have three spiders for you today, which I will present in the order of increasing scariness.
The first was chosen for its laid-back attitude:
.
.
.
.
.
Very chill. And obviously going for whatever wants to land on that leaf. Interesting that its eyes are facing the leaf - what if something wants to eat IT?
I hope the mailman is not afraid of spiders.
This is the first time I have seen a crab spider that looks like this - this coloring, I mean. It has caught an ant to eat. Yum.
